1. Существование атомов, мельчайших частиц химического элемента, подтверждается множеством прямых и косвенных экспериментов. Вот некоторые из наиболее известных:
Броуновское движение. В 1827 году ботаник Роберт Броун наблюдал в микроскоп за хаотичным, беспорядочным движением цветочной пыльцы в капле воды. Он не мог объяснить причину этого движения. Позднее, в 1905 году, Альберт Эйнштейн теоретически объяснил это явление. Он предположил, что видимые частицы (пыльца) движутся из-за того, что их со всех сторон постоянно и неравномерно толкают невидимые, гораздо меньшие частицы — молекулы воды, которые сами находятся в непрерывном тепловом движении. Молекулы, в свою очередь, состоят из атомов. Это было одним из первых веских доказательств атомно-молекулярной теории строения вещества.
Диффузия. Явление самопроизвольного проникновения молекул одного вещества в межмолекулярные промежутки другого (например, распространение запаха в воздухе или растворение краски в воде) также доказывает, что вещества состоят из отдельных частиц, находящихся в постоянном движении.
Сканирующая туннельная и атомно-силовая микроскопия. Создание в конце XX века сканирующих туннельных (СТМ) и атомно-силовых (АСМ) микроскопов стало прямым доказательством существования атомов. Эти приборы позволяют получать изображения поверхностей с разрешением до отдельных атомов, "ощупывая" поверхность острой иглой. Ученые смогли не только увидеть отдельные атомы, но и перемещать их, создавая наноструктуры. Например, в 1989 году сотрудники IBM с помощью СТМ выложили 35 атомов ксенона на поверхности кристалла никеля, чтобы написать название своей компании.

3. Масло растекается по поверхности воды, раздвигая порошок, и образует тонкую пленку в форме круга. Необходимо измерить диаметр $\text{D}$ этого круга.
4. Сделаем ключевое допущение: толщина масляной пленки равна диаметру одной молекулы масла $\text{d}$.
5. Объем масляной пленки можно рассматривать как объем очень низкого цилиндра с площадью основания $\text{S}$ и высотой $\text{d}$. Таким образом, объем капли равен объему этого цилиндра:
