Тепловой двигатель — это устройство, которое преобразует тепловую энергию в механическую работу. Принцип работы любого теплового двигателя основан на циклическом процессе, и для его осуществления необходимы три основных элемента.
1. Нагреватель
Нагреватель — это термодинамическая система с высокой температурой $T_1$, которая служит источником энергии для двигателя. Он передает рабочему телу определенное количество теплоты $Q_1$. В двигателях внутреннего сгорания (ДВС) роль нагревателя выполняет горящая топливно-воздушная смесь, а в паровых турбинах — паровой котел.
2. Рабочее тело

Рабочее тело получает тепло от нагревателя, в результате чего его внутренняя энергия увеличивается, и оно расширяется. При расширении рабочее тело совершает работу $\text{A}$ (например, толкает поршень или вращает лопатки турбины). В ДВС рабочим телом являются продукты сгорания топлива.
3. Холодильник
Холодильник — это система с более низкой температурой $T_2$ ($T_2 < T_1$), которой рабочее тело отдает то количество теплоты $Q_2$, которое не было преобразовано в работу. Для того чтобы двигатель мог работать циклически, рабочее тело должно вернуться в свое первоначальное состояние. Это возможно только при его охлаждении и сжатии, что требует отвода тепла.
