Второй закон термодинамики — это фундаментальный постулат, который определяет направление самопроизвольных термодинамических процессов. В отличие от первого закона, который является законом сохранения энергии и не накладывает ограничений на направление процессов, второй закон вводит понятие необратимости и указывает, какие процессы могут происходить в природе, а какие нет.
Существует несколько эквивалентных формулировок второго закона термодинамики.
Формулировка Клаузиуса (1850 г.)
"Невозможен процесс, единственным результатом которого является передача тепла от более холодного тела к более горячему".
Это означает, что теплота самопроизвольно переходит только от тел с более высокой температурой к телам с более низкой температурой. Для обратного процесса, как, например, в холодильных установках или тепловых насосах, необходимо совершить работу, то есть затратить энергию извне. Этот принцип объясняет, почему чашка горячего чая остывает до комнатной температуры, а не нагревается самопроизвольно, забирая тепло из окружающего воздуха.
Формулировка Кельвина-Планка (1851 г.)
"Невозможен круговой процесс, единственным результатом которого было бы производство работы за счет охлаждения теплового резервуара".
Эта формулировка утверждает невозможность создания "вечного двигателя второго рода" — устройства, которое бы циклически работало, превращая в работу всю теплоту, полученную от одного источника (нагревателя). Любой тепловой двигатель, работающий по циклу, должен не только получать тепло от нагревателя, но и отдавать часть этого тепла холодильнику (резервуару с более низкой температурой). Эффективность (КПД) теплового двигателя $\eta$ всегда меньше 100%. Максимально возможный КПД для двигателя, работающего между температурами нагревателя $T_{H}$ и холодильника $T_{C}$, определяется циклом Карно: $\eta_{max} = 1 - \frac{T_C}{T_H}$ (температуры должны быть выражены в Кельвинах).
Энтропия и второй закон термодинамики
Наиболее общей является формулировка второго закона через понятие энтропии. Энтропия ($\text{S}$) — это физическая величина, являющаяся мерой необратимого рассеивания энергии или мерой беспорядка (хаоса) в системе. Изменение энтропии $dS$ в равновесном (обратимом) процессе определяется как отношение полученного системой элементарного количества теплоты $\delta Q_{rev}$ к абсолютной температуре системы $\text{T}$: $dS = \frac{\delta Q_{rev}}{T}$.
Формулировка второго закона через энтропию звучит так: "В изолированной (замкнутой) системе энтропия не может убывать. Она либо возрастает (в случае необратимых процессов), либо остается постоянной (в случае обратимых процессов)".
Математически это выражается неравенством: $\Delta S_{iso} \ge 0$. Все реальные процессы в природе необратимы, поэтому энтропия Вселенной (которую можно считать изолированной системой) постоянно возрастает. Это означает, что все процессы в мире стремятся к состоянию с наибольшим беспорядком, то есть к термодинамическому равновесию.
Статистическая интерпретация
С точки зрения статистической физики, развитой Людвигом Больцманом, энтропия связана с числом микросостояний ($\text{W}$), которыми может быть реализовано данное макроскопическое состояние системы. Связь выражается формулой Больцмана: $S = k_B \ln W$, где $k_B$ — постоянная Больцмана.
В этой интерпретации второй закон термодинамики означает, что система самопроизвольно переходит из менее вероятных состояний (с меньшим числом микросостояний $\text{W}$) в более вероятные (с большим числом $\text{W}$). Таким образом, рост энтропии — это переход системы к наиболее вероятному состоянию.
Значение второго закона
Второй закон термодинамики имеет огромное мировоззренческое и практическое значение. Он устанавливает "стрелу времени", показывая, почему процессы в макромире идут в одном направлении (например, старение, перемешивание). Он определяет пределы эффективности преобразования теплоты в работу, что является основой для проектирования всех тепловых машин.
