Un réseau social est un ensemble d'identités sociales, telles que des individus ou encore des organisations, reliées entre elles par des liens créés lors d'interactions sociales.
Certains réseaux sociaux sur Internet regroupent des amis de la vie réelle. D'autres aident à se créer un cercle d'amis, à trouver des partenaires commerciaux, un emploi ou autres. Il s'agit de services de réseautage social, comme Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Viadeo ou LinkedIn.
De plus en plus de réseaux sociaux se créent sur le net. Ce sont en quelque sorte des clubs «privés» destinés à de nombreux publics souvent sélectionnés par centres d'intérêts personnels. Ainsi, certains partis politiques créent leur propre réseau social. Des artistes se lancent aussi dans la création de leurs propres réseaux sociaux. Les hauts dirigeants ont également leur propre site communautaire.
Régulièrement, certains magazines ou spécialistes proclament qu'un nouveau réseau social vient de voir le jour. Ils affirment alors que bientôt ce sera la fin de Facebook ou Twitter et tout va changer. Pourtant rien n'a vraiment bougé.
Toutefois, depuis maintenant deux ans et tout particulièrement ces derniers mois, un réseau social très orienté business fait le plein d'abonnés outre-Atlantique. Il s'agit de Pinterest (http://pinterest.com) qui est le premier site au monde à avoir franchi la barre de 10 millions de visiteurs très rapidement. On pourrait voir dans ce réseau un nouvel usage de recommandations marchandes qui pointe son nez sur la Toile.
Pinterest ressemble d'une certaine manière à Tumblr, avec son côté très graphique et un usage obsessionnel de la photo. Une fois abonné, il s'agit tout simplement d'afficher sur un tableau virtuel ses goûts dans des domaines variés, mais aussi de valider les choix des autres. Comme on découpait dans un catalogue papier nos modèles ou produits préférés, on attache ici ses choix par le biais d'épingles virtuelles (pin en anglais) piquées sur des photos de nos choix qu'on a glanées sur le web. Elles sont ensuite rangées par tableaux thématiques (board). Puis, sur ce réseau social, on commente le choix des autres, on les partage ou bien on les aime... Et au final, on peut évidemment acheter les produits convoités. C'est en quelque sorte la pratique usuelle d'un réseau social conversationnel, mais avec la force virale de choix pro-consommation.
C'est pour cela que les marques se ruent sur Pinterest et qu'il fait quelque peu vaciller les mastodontes, qui étaient globalement restés dans le domaine du partage et de la conversation. Cette orientation commerciale affichée et efficace a entraîné les marques vers ce nouveau mode de recommandation. En clair: être bien représenté sur Pinterest pourrait contribuer à être mieux acheté ensuite.
