Le commissaire-priseur proclama: «Neuf mille huit cents». Mais, cette fois, Robin avait dit son dernier mot. La limite qu’il s’était fixée était dépassée, et sa fi-gure prit une expression d’indifférence stoïque.
— Neuf mille huit cents pour la première… pour la deuxième, répéta le commissaire-priseur.
— Neuf mille huit cents pour la troisième fois. A miss Lorimer!
Ces dernières secondes lui avaient paru interminables. Elle s’était juré d’avoir cette miniature et, si Rubin avait enchéri encore une fois, il l’aurait contrainte à se déclarer vaincue.
Elle rentra dans sa chambre. La pièce était tranquille et ne contenait que quel-ques meubles choisis avec goût.
Elle évoquait le temps de ses débuts, se revoyait, jeune fille de dix-sept ans, alors qu’elle venait de quitter l’école… Elle n’était alors qu’une timide petite dactylo dans un bazar de catégorie supérieure. On lui avait accordé une place d’apprentie, parce que son père connaissait l’un des propriétaires.
Mais malgré cette recommandation, chaque fois qu’on lui adressait la parole, elle était prise de tremblements.
Depuis lors, sa vie avait bien changé. Elle dirigeait maintenant la maison «Anti-ca» et était réputée pour son goût et sa compétence. On la considérait comme une spécialiste dans les installations de styles anciens, dans toutes les questions touchant aux arts décoratifs et à la pein-ture. Peut-être bien était-elle, de toutes les femmes du monde entier qui font commerce d’antiquité, la plus connue? Tout cela, pourtant, n’éveillait en elle que de sombres pensées.
Si elle avait réussi, c’est qu’elle était douée d’une volonté de fer, qu’elle avait serré les dents, et résolument tout sacri-fié. Pour faire sa carrière elle avait imposé à son jeune cœur craintif la discipline la plus sévère et les plus dures privations. A tout prix elle avait voulu arriver, devenir quelqu’un.
Elle avait maintenant atteint son but et son orgueil était satisfait. Mais hélas! Comme tout, en fin de compte, lui sem-blait creux et vain.
