В стереометрии плоскость принято изображать в виде параллелограмма или любой замкнутой области на плоскости чертежа. Обозначим плоскость греческой буквой α. Точку M, которая принадлежит плоскости, изобразим внутри параллелограмма. Точку K, которая не принадлежит плоскости, изобразим вне этого параллелограмма.
Запишем эти пространственные отношения с помощью соответствующих символов. Утверждение «точка M принадлежит плоскости α» записывается с помощью символа принадлежности $ \in $ (читается «принадлежит»).
$M \in \alpha$
Утверждение «точка K не принадлежит плоскости α» записывается с помощью символа непринадлежности $ \notin $ (читается «не принадлежит»).
$K \notin \alpha$
