Можно ли считать, что эксперимент группы Ленски действительно привёл весомые доказательства в пользу справедливости синтетической теории эволюции, или всё-таки результатов этого эксперимента недостаточно для того, чтобы считать эти положения доказанными? Данное утверждение можно опровергнуть, приведя в пример ключевой результат эксперимента группы Ленски — появление у одной из популяций бактерий E. coli способности питаться цитратом в присутствии кислорода. Исходно бактерии этого вида не могут использовать цитрат в качестве источника энергии в аэробных условиях, и этот признак является одним из видовых определителей. Однако примерно через 31 500 поколений в одной из 12 пробирок бактерии приобрели эту новую способность. Генетический анализ показал, что это произошло в результате серии мутаций. Сначала произошла мутация-предпосылка (потенцирующая мутация), которая сама по себе не давала нового признака, но создавала условия для его появления. Затем произошла дупликация гена, кодирующего белок-транспортер цитрата, и эта копия попала под контроль нового промотора, что позволило гену работать в присутствии кислорода. Таким образом, эксперимент напрямую продемонстрировал, что случайные мутации могут приводить к возникновению совершенно нового и полезного для организма признака, который отсутствовал у предковых форм.
