В Китае весной 1958 г. был разработан государственный план борьбы с воробьями, которые были объявлены «расхитителями зерна». Пропаганда объясняла, что воробьи (рис. 57) массово пожирают зёрна урожая, принося национальному хозяйству колоссальный убыток — по подсчётам китайско-го научно-исследовательского института зоологии, от воробьёв за год терялся такой объём зерна, которого бы хватило, чтобы прокормить 35 миллионов человек.
В ходе развёрнутой кампании только за три дня в Пекине и Шанхае было убито 900 тысяч птиц, а к первой декаде ноября того же года по всей стране уничтожено почти два миллиарда воробьёв. В Пекине и приморских провин-циях, где воробьёв истребляли особенно усердно, попутно поубивали вообще всех мелких птиц.
Истребление воробьёв действитель-но дало значительное повышение урожая зерновых в первый год после начала кампании. Но затем был отмечен взрывной рост числа гусениц и саранчи: полчища насекомых уничтожили посевы риса и пшеницы, сады и огороды по всей стране, так как в экосистеме исчез важный естественный регулятор, которого никто не мог заменить. Ещё через год из-за прежде сформировавшейся попу-ляции вредителей урожай сильно уменьшились и в стране наступил голод.
Почему же в данном случае вроде бы благое дело спровоцировало настоящую катастрофу? Дело в том, что китайские зоологи недостаточно изучили образ жизни воробьёв и поэтому не знали того, что зерном кормятся только взрослые птицы, а своих птенцов воробьи выкармливают исключительно насекомыми и их личинками. Соответственно, когда исчезли воробьи, некому стало уничтожать насекомых, среди которых было много вредителей сельского хозяйства.
Так опытным путём было доказано, что агротехническая польза воробьёв существенно выше наносимого вреда. После этого китайцы начали компанию по восстановлению численности воробьёв, покупая этих серых и невзрачных птиц (которые вдруг оказались для КНР дороже золота) в СССР, Индии и даже в Канаде.

1. Любое вмешательство в сложившиеся экосистемы, особенно уничтожение целого вида, может привести к непредсказуемым и катастрофическим последствиям, нарушив природный баланс.
2. Прежде чем принимать масштабные решения, влияющие на природу, необходимо провести всестороннее научное исследование. В данном случае не был учтён тот факт, что воробьи, поедая зерно, в то же время выкармливают птенцов насекомыми, являясь естественными регуляторами численности вредителей.
3. Польза, приносимая некоторыми видами, может быть не так очевидна, как наносимый ими вред, но при этом значительно его превосходить. Агротехническая польза воробьёв в борьбе с насекомыми оказалась существенно выше вреда от поедания ими части урожая.
4. Непродуманные действия человека по изменению экосистем могут в конечном итоге обернуться против него самого, приводя к экономическим потерям и гуманитарным кризисам, таким как голод.
