Деятельность живых организмов коренным образом изменила состав атмосферы планеты. Изначально она была практически лишена свободного кислорода и богата углекислым газом.
1. Появление фотосинтезирующих организмов (цианобактерий, а затем растений) привело к глобальному изменению. В процессе фотосинтеза они поглощали углекислый газ и выделяли кислород. Это привело к накоплению кислорода в атмосфере и значительному снижению концентрации углекислого газа.
2. Накопление кислорода сделало возможным развитие аэробного дыхания, которое энергетически гораздо эффективнее анаэробного. Это стало толчком к эволюции сложных многоклеточных организмов.
3. В верхних слоях атмосферы из молекулярного кислорода (O₂) под воздействием солнечного ультрафиолета стал образовываться озон (O₃). Это привело к формированию озонового слоя, который защищает поверхность Земли от жесткого ультрафиолетового излучения, что позволило живым организмам выйти из воды на сушу.
4. Живые организмы, в частности бактерии, играют ключевую роль и в круговороте других газов, например, азота, преобразуя атмосферный азот в доступные для растений формы.
