4. The fame of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus spread all over the world in ancient times. It took 120 years to build it. It was completed by the year 550 B. C. A man named Herostratus set the great shrine ablaze in 356 B. C., only because he wanted his name to go down in history. Say what you think of such a way to gain immortality. Consider also such examples as:
• the assassination of John F. Kennedy by Lee Harvey Oswald;
• the murder of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman.

I think this is a terrible way to gain immortality. It's not true immortality, but infamy. People like Herostratus, Lee Harvey Oswald, and Mark David Chapman are remembered for destroying something beautiful or taking a valuable life. Their fame is based on a negative, destructive act. I believe it is much better to be remembered for creating something good, helping others, or making a positive impact on the world. This kind of "immortality" is just a historical footnote of shame. True immortality is being remembered with love and respect, not with hatred or disgust.
Я думаю, что это ужасный способ обрести бессмертие. Это не настоящее бессмертие, а дурная слава. Таких людей, как Герострат, Ли Харви Освальд и Марк Дэвид Чепмен, помнят за то, что они разрушили что-то прекрасное или отняли ценную жизнь. Их слава основана на негативном, разрушительном поступке. Я считаю, что гораздо лучше, когда тебя помнят за создание чего-то хорошего, помощь другим или положительное влияние на мир. Такое "бессмертие" — это всего лишь постыдная историческая сноска. Настоящее бессмертие — это когда тебя помнят с любовью и уважением, а не с ненавистью или отвращением.
