Территорию Франции обычно делят на три крупных региона. Северный регион включает северную часть Франции, в том числе Парижскую агломерацию, Лотарингию, Эльзас. Здесь сосредоточена половина населения и производится основной объём промышленной продукции страны. Многоотраслевая промышленность является доминирующей отраслью в производственной структуре региона. При этом исключительную роль здесь играет Париж, вобравший в себя не только хозяйственные, но и все основные особенности и достоинства Франции.
В состав Юго-Восточного региона входит долина Роны, Средиземноморье, Альпы. По уровню развития Юго-Восток значительно уступает Северному региону. Промышленное производство сосредоточено здесь преимущественно в Лионе и близлежащих городах. Лион - второй после Парижа экономический центр Франции. Крупные промышленные производства сложились также в районе Марселя (1,2 млн чел.) - третьего по числу жителей города Франции, главного морского порта страны. В регионе интенсивно развивается высокотоварное сельское хозяйство, специализирующееся на виноградарстве, овощеводстве и садоводстве. Важную роль в экономике региона играют туристические комплексы восточной части Средиземноморского побережья.
Западный регион охватывает половину площади страны, но производит лишь Уд промышленной продукции. Запад имеет самый низкий уровень экономического развития. Его специализацию определяет сельское хозяйство, а также отрасли лёгкой и пищевой индустрии. Промышленное производство сосредоточено в Бордо, Тулузе, Нанте, Сен-Назере. Теперь в этих городах получили развитие военная промышленность (авиационно-ракетная, аэрокосмическая и др.), специализированное судостроение, производство химической продукции.
