Почти каждый пятый человек на Земле - гражданин КНР, численность населения которой составляет более 1,37 млрд человек (2015). Такое большое население, с одной стороны, предопределяет наличие огромных трудовых ресурсов, с другой - затрудняет повышение доходов населения, обостряет жилищную и продовольственную проблемы, снижает возможности трудоустройства. Вот почему ещё в середине XX в. в Китае стала проводиться демографическая политика («одна семья - один ребёнок»), направленная на ограничение рождаемости, но из-за опасения быстрого старения населения власти КНР решили от неё отказаться.
Подавляющая часть населения (более 90%) страны - китайцы (ханьцы), однако здесь (прежде всего в автономных районах) немало и представителей национальных меньшинств - чжуаны, монголы, уйгуры, казахи, тибетцы и др.
Страна располагает колоссальной рабочей силой. Лиц в трудоспособном возрасте насчитывается более 800 млн человек, однако демографическая ситуация постепенно ухудшается из-за увеличения доли пожилых граждан.
Китай - страна многих религий. Хуэй, уйгуры, казахи, киргизы, татары, узбеки, таджики и др. исповедуют ислам, религия тибетцев, монголов, тай и югуров - буддизм-ламаизм. У некоторых народностей распространено христианство, а у большинства орочонов, эвенков и дауров - шаманизм. Но большинство верующих исповедуют даосизм и конфуцианство.
