Как проходило формирование современной политической карты Южной Азии?

До середины XX в. страны региона (за исключением Непала) были колониями Великобритании. Главными событиями в формировании современной политической карты Южной Азии стали обретение ими независимости и раздел бывшей Британской Индии на Индию и Пакистан. Последний состоял из двух территориально разобщенных частей - Западного Пакистана и Восточного. Позднее на месте Восточного Пакистана была провозглашена Республика Бангладеш. Разделение Индии на отдельные государства сопровождалось усилением религиозных распрей между индуистами и мусульманами, переселением многих миллионов людей, разрывом экономических и культурных связей, бесконечными пограничными спорами, сепаратизмом (стремлением ряда территорий выйти из состава государства). Наиболее острым остается до сих пор незатухающий спор Пакистана и Индии из-за Кашмира.
