3 a) Read the text about a Scottish explorer and say why David Livingstone was a hero for his countrymen.
David Livingstone was born in 1813 in Scotland. He grew up in a family which was far from prosperous. At the age of 10 David had to begin earning money, but he always wanted to get a good education.
Later he studied medicine in Glasgow and also became a missionary¹, which helped him to go to Africa in 1840.
For the next 15 years Livingstone explored the African continent and travelled farther than any other European. Travelling in Africa was very dangerous, but Livingstone bravely explored new and new places. He had a real devotion to it.
During one of his journeys he saw a great picturesque waterfall and named it after his queen Victoria Falls. (Now we know that it's one of the biggest in the world, a place of striking beauty.)
Livingstone returned to Britain a hero and began writing and giving lectures about Africa. With his help Europeans learned a lot of facts about the continent they hadn't known before.
His second journey to Africa wasn't very successful. He died during his third expedition in 1873, aged 60. Livingstone is buried in Westminster Abbey, London.

David Livingstone was a hero for his countrymen because he was a brave explorer who travelled farther in Africa than any other European. He discovered new places, like the great Victoria Falls. When he returned to Britain, he shared his knowledge through books and lectures, which helped Europeans learn a lot about the African continent.

I would like to talk about Yuri Gagarin. He was the first person in the world to fly into space! His flight was on April 12, 1961, and it was a very big event. He became a hero for the whole world because he was very brave and showed that space travel is possible. In Russia, we are very proud of him.
Я бы хотел рассказать о Юрии Гагарине. Он был первым человеком в мире, который полетел в космос! Его полет состоялся 12 апреля 1961 года, и это было очень большое событие. Он стал героем для всего мира, потому что был очень смелым и показал, что полеты в космос возможны. В России мы им очень гордимся.
