Апеннинский полуостров захватили лангобарды.
На Балканский полуостров вторгались славяне, причем боем прошли его целиком до Пелопоннеса включительно. Потом туда же пришли тюркские народы : авары и болгары.
В Крыму восточные римляне имели дело с печенегами. Но чаще всего, они были наоборот союзниками. Та же самая история с хазарами на Кавказе.
На восточной границе сильно было воздействие Сасанидского Ирана.
Но конечно, главный урон империи нанесли арабы, которые пришли со своей новой религией - исламом.
Великое переселение народов завершилось нашествием турков-сельджуков, которые вторгались на территорию Восточной Римской империи.
Кроме того, на Западе территорию империи кроме лангобардов сокращали и нормандцы.
