Западная Европа несколько раз помогала Восточный Римской империи, однако именно в 1453 году не смогла накопить силы после предыдущих попыток: последний перед штурмом Константинополя такой поход потерпел страшное поражение всего за 9 лет до этого в битве при Варне в 1444 году. Тогда погибло очень много христианских воинов, среди них даже король Польши и Венгрии Владислав III, а также влиятельный церковный деятель Джулиано Цезарини. Новых сил накопить ещё просто не успели.
Кроме того, в Западной Европе были и свои войны, которые тоже истощали силы. Например, в один год с захватом Константинополя закончилась Столетняя война, Так что Англия и Франция, которые её вели, какое-то время после этого при всём желании не смогли бы прислать значительную помощь (особенно Англия, где почти сразу началась война Алый и Белой розы).
Кроме того, предыдущие поражения показали европейцам, что борьба против турок - дело безнадёжное. Поэтому государства, над которыми не нависла угроза завоевания прямо сейчас, не очень рвались в битву. Да, можно сказать, что они испугались. После таких поражений это было немудрено.
Наконец, Европа не очень верила в силы самой Восточной Римской империи. Союзники обычно хотят помогать, а не воевать вместо кого-то. Восточная Римская империя была слаба и не было уверенности, что она окажет османам хоть какое-то сопротивление. В реальности получилось по-другому, но когда до Европы дошли сведения о героическом сопротивлении Константинополя, собирать войско в помощь городу было уже поздно, потому что войско не собирается за одну неделю и даже за один месяц.
