Дано квадратное уравнение $4x^2 - ax - 5 = 0$. Пусть $x_1$ и $x_2$ — его корни.
По условию задачи, сумма квадратов корней равна $\frac{11}{4}$, что можно записать в виде уравнения: $x_1^2 + x_2^2 = \frac{11}{4}$
Для решения задачи воспользуемся теоремой Виета. Для квадратного уравнения вида $Ax^2 + Bx + C = 0$ с корнями $x_1$ и $x_2$ справедливы следующие соотношения:
Сумма корней: $x_1 + x_2 = -\frac{B}{A}$
Произведение корней: $x_1 \cdot x_2 = \frac{C}{A}$
В нашем уравнении коэффициенты равны: $A=4$, $B=-a$, $C=-5$. Перед применением теоремы Виета убедимся, что уравнение имеет действительные корни. Для этого проверим знак дискриминанта $D$: $D = B^2 - 4AC = (-a)^2 - 4 \cdot 4 \cdot (-5) = a^2 + 80$. Так как $a^2 \ge 0$ для любого действительного $a$, то $D = a^2 + 80 > 0$. Следовательно, уравнение всегда имеет два различных действительных корня при любом значении $a$.
Теперь применим теорему Виета к данному уравнению:
Сумма корней: $x_1 + x_2 = -\frac{-a}{4} = \frac{a}{4}$.
Произведение корней: $x_1 \cdot x_2 = \frac{-5}{4}$.
Выразим сумму квадратов корней через их сумму и произведение, используя формулу квадрата суммы: $(x_1 + x_2)^2 = x_1^2 + 2x_1x_2 + x_2^2$. Отсюда: $x_1^2 + x_2^2 = (x_1 + x_2)^2 - 2x_1x_2$.
Подставим в это выражение известные нам значения из условия и теоремы Виета: $\frac{11}{4} = \left(\frac{a}{4}\right)^2 - 2\left(-\frac{5}{4}\right)$.
Решим полученное уравнение относительно $a$: $\frac{11}{4} = \frac{a^2}{16} + \frac{10}{4}$.
Перенесем $\frac{10}{4}$ в левую часть уравнения: $\frac{a^2}{16} = \frac{11}{4} - \frac{10}{4}$.
$\frac{a^2}{16} = \frac{1}{4}$.
Чтобы найти $a^2$, умножим обе части уравнения на 16: $a^2 = \frac{16 \cdot 1}{4}$.
$a^2 = 4$.
Из этого следует, что $a$ может принимать два значения: $a = \sqrt{4}$ или $a = -\sqrt{4}$.
$a_1 = 2$, $a_2 = -2$.
Ответ: $a = \pm 2$.
