Пусть $v$ км/ч — первоначальная скорость поезда. Тогда время, которое поезд должен был затратить на прохождение пути в 720 км, составляет $t_1 = \frac{720}{v}$ часов.
Согласно условию, поезд увеличил скорость на 10 км/ч, следовательно, его новая скорость стала $(v + 10)$ км/ч. Время, затраченное на тот же путь с новой скоростью, равно $t_2 = \frac{720}{v + 10}$ часов.
Известно, что в результате увеличения скорости время в пути сократилось на 1 час. Это означает, что разница между первоначальным и новым временем составляет 1 час:

Составим уравнение, подставив в него выражения для $t_1$ и $t_2$:
