Вегетативную нервную систему называют автономной, потому что она регулирует деятельность внутренних органов и систем (сердца, сосудов, желез) в основном непроизвольно, то есть независимо от воли и сознания человека. Слово «автономная» происходит от греческих слов autos — «сам» и nomos — «закон», что буквально означает «самоуправляемая».
Такое название является достаточно верным и точным, так как оно хорошо отражает основную функциональную особенность этой системы — её относительную самостоятельность и автоматизм в работе. Однако абсолютной автономии не существует. Деятельность вегетативной нервной системы находится под контролем высших отделов центральной нервной системы, в частности гипоталамуса и коры больших полушарий. Поэтому, хотя её работа и не требует сознательного вмешательства, она тесно интегрирована с другими частями нервной системы и реагирует на эмоциональное состояние и мыслительные процессы человека.
