Решение
Пламя свечи в безветренную погоду устанавливается вертикально из-за явления, называемого естественной конвекцией, которое возникает под действием силы тяжести. Этот процесс можно объяснить в несколько шагов.
1. В процессе горения свечи выделяется большое количество теплоты. Эта теплота сильно нагревает продукты сгорания (в основном углекислый газ и водяной пар) и прилегающие слои воздуха.
2. Согласно физическим законам, при нагревании газ расширяется, и его плотность уменьшается. Таким образом, горячие газы внутри и вокруг пламени становятся значительно менее плотными (то есть легче), чем окружающий их более холодный воздух. Плотность газа $ \rho $ при постоянном давлении обратно пропорциональна его абсолютной температуре $\text{T}$: $ \rho \propto 1/T $.
3. В соответствии с законом Архимеда, на менее плотное тело, погруженное в более плотную среду, действует выталкивающая сила, направленная против силы тяжести. В данном случае на объем горячего, менее плотного газа действует выталкивающая сила со стороны окружающего холодного, более плотного воздуха. Эта сила направлена вертикально вверх.
4. Под действием этой выталкивающей силы горячие газы начинают подниматься. Это создает устойчивый восходящий поток, который называется конвекционным потоком. Этот поток увлекает за собой раскаленные частицы сажи, которые и делают пламя видимым, "вытягивая" его вверх. Одновременно, на место поднявшихся горячих газов к основанию фитиля снизу и с боков поступает свежий, богатый кислородом воздух, который необходим для поддержания горения.
Именно этот устойчивый, направленный вертикально вверх конвекционный поток и придает пламени его характерную вытянутую форму в условиях отсутствия ветра.
Ответ: В безветрие пламя свечи устанавливается вертикально из-за явления конвекции. Продукты горения и окружающий воздух нагреваются, их плотность становится меньше плотности холодного воздуха. В результате действия выталкивающей силы (силы Архимеда) со стороны окружающего холодного воздуха, горячие, менее плотные газы устремляются вверх, увлекая за собой пламя и придавая ему вытянутую вертикальную форму.
