Сила Ампера — это сила, с которой магнитное поле действует на проводник с током. Электрический ток в проводнике представляет собой упорядоченное движение большого числа заряженных частиц (носителей заряда, например, электронов). Таким образом, сила Ампера является результатом сложения сил Лоренца, действующих на каждый отдельный носитель заряда в проводнике.
Рассмотрим небольшой прямолинейный участок проводника длиной $\Delta l$ и площадью поперечного сечения $\text{S}$. Объём этого участка равен $\Delta V = S \cdot \Delta l$.
