Данное явление объясняется химическими превращениями, которые происходят в водном растворе хлора с течением времени.
Почему нейтральный раствор лакмуса, добавленный в свежеприготовленную хлорную воду, обесцвечивается
Хлорная вода — это раствор хлора ($Cl_2$) в воде ($H_2O$). При растворении хлор вступает в обратимую реакцию с водой, в результате которой образуются две кислоты: соляная ($HCl$) и хлорноватистая ($HClO$).
$Cl_2 + H_2O \rightleftharpoons HCl + HClO$
Хотя обе кислоты создают кислую среду, ключевую роль играет хлорноватистая кислота ($HClO$). Она является очень сильным окислителем. $HClO$ нестабильна и легко разлагается с выделением атомарного кислорода, который обладает высокой реакционной способностью:
$HClO \rightarrow HCl + [O]$
Атомарный кислород окисляет молекулы органических красителей, таких как лакмус, разрушая их хромофорные группы (участки молекулы, отвечающие за цвет). В результате этого окисления (отбеливания) лакмус теряет свой цвет. Процесс обесцвечивания происходит настолько быстро, что он преобладает над изменением цвета лакмуса на красный под действием кислой среды.
Ответ: В свежеприготовленной хлорной воде присутствует хлорноватистая кислота ($HClO$), которая является сильным окислителем и обесцвечивает (окисляет) лакмус.
Почему раствор лакмуса, добавленный в хлорную воду, приготовленную давно, становится красным
При длительном хранении, особенно под действием света, нестабильная хлорноватистая кислота ($HClO$) полностью разлагается. Продуктами ее разложения являются стабильная соляная кислота и кислород:
$2HClO \xrightarrow{h\nu} 2HCl + O_2 \uparrow$
Таким образом, "старая" хлорная вода по своему составу представляет собой, по сути, разбавленный раствор соляной кислоты ($HCl$). В ней уже отсутствует сильный окислитель — хлорноватистая кислота.
При добавлении лакмуса в такой раствор он выполняет свою обычную функцию кислотно-основного индикатора. В кислой среде, создаваемой соляной кислотой, лакмус изменяет свой цвет на красный. Поскольку отбеливающего компонента в растворе больше нет, обесцвечивания не происходит.
Ответ: В хлорной воде, приготовленной давно, хлорноватистая кислота разложилась, и в растворе осталась в основном соляная кислота ($HCl$), которая создает кислую среду и окрашивает лакмус в красный цвет.
