Образ жизни Петра в Преображенском был праздным, но при этом активным и познавательным. Обязательных дел, несмотря на действующий царский титул, у будущего реформатора было немного, только иногда он приезжал в Москву для участия в официальных церемониях, решать государственные дела не учился. Обучение в обычном смысле этого слова тоже было почти заброшено, царь его откровенно игнорировал. Однако со своими потешными полками он упражнялся физически самыми разными способами. Его игры всё больше напоминали настоящую войну также и в плане опасности для участников. При этом царь активно познавал окружающий мир. Например, в потешных полках он освоил сразу нескольких солдатских специальностей, был и бомбардиром, и барабанщиком. Кроме того, целый новый западный мир ему открыл его друг Лефорт, он же привёл царя в Немецкую слободу, где тот начал пропадать всё дольше, при этом всё больше узнавая.
