Новороссия была очень плодородной землёй за счёт степной чернозёмной почвы. Её освоение принесло большую прибыль в казну за счёт налогов и территории для раздачи в качестве награды. Кроме того, Россия получила и новое население за счёт переселенцев именно в Новороссию из Европы. Население, тем более с такими навыками, всегда было в России ценностью при её огромных порой почти пустых просторах.
Но Крымский полуостров имел даже большее значение. Он стал воротами в Чёрное море, что расширяло торговлю, но и расширяло военные заботы, это во многом определило политику России в следующее столетие с небольшим. Именно овладение Крымом поставила перед Россией новую цель, показала журавля в небе в виде Черноморских проливов.
