Жизненный цикл звезды — это последовательность изменений, которые звезда претерпевает на протяжении своего существования, от рождения из газопылевого облака до превращения в компактный объект, такой как белый карлик, нейтронная звезда или черная дыра. Этот цикл определяется в первую очередь начальной массой звезды.
Рождение звезды
Звезды рождаются в гигантских, холодных и плотных облаках межзвездного газа и пыли, называемых молекулярными облаками или туманностями. Под действием гравитации или внешнего воздействия (например, ударной волны от взрыва сверхновой) такое облако начинает сжиматься. В процессе сжатия оно фрагментируется на более мелкие уплотнения, которые продолжают коллапсировать.
В центре каждого такого уплотнения формируется горячее и плотное ядро — протозвезда. Гравитационная энергия сжимающегося вещества превращается в тепловую, и температура протозвезды начинает расти. Она продолжает набирать массу, притягивая окружающий газ и пыль. Этот этап может длиться сотни тысяч лет.
Ответ: Звезды формируются из гигантских газопылевых облаков (туманностей), которые сжимаются под действием гравитации, образуя горячие и плотные протозвезды.
Главная последовательность
Когда температура и давление в ядре протозвезды достигают критических значений (около 10-15 миллионов Кельвинов), запускаются реакции термоядерного синтеза. Начинается процесс превращения водорода в гелий, сопровождающийся выделением огромного количества энергии. Эта энергия создает давление излучения, направленное наружу, которое уравновешивает гравитационные силы, стремящиеся сжать звезду. Наступает состояние гидростатического равновесия, и звезда вступает в наиболее продолжительный и стабильный период своей жизни — стадию главной последовательности.
На этой стадии звезда проводит около 90% своей жизни. Ее цвет, температура и светимость зависят от ее массы. Массивные звезды (голубые гиганты) очень горячие и яркие, но они сжигают свое топливо очень быстро (миллионы лет). Звезды с малой массой (красные карлики) — тусклые и холодные, но живут чрезвычайно долго (триллионы лет). Наше Солнце является звездой главной последовательности и просуществует в этом состоянии еще около 5 миллиардов лет.
Ответ: Главная последовательность — это самый долгий этап жизни звезды, на котором в ее ядре происходит термоядерный синтез водорода в гелий, а силы гравитации уравновешены давлением излучения.
Эволюция звезд с малой и средней массой (подобных Солнцу)
Когда в ядре звезды, подобной Солнцу (с массой до 8 масс Солнца, $M_☉$), заканчивается водород, термоядерные реакции в центре прекращаются. Ядро начинает сжиматься под действием гравитации и разогреваться. Это приводит к тому, что термоядерное горение водорода начинается в слое, окружающем ядро. Внешние слои звезды при этом сильно расширяются и остывают, превращая звезду в красного гиганта. Размеры звезды могут увеличиться в сотни раз.
Далее, когда температура в ядре достигает примерно 100 миллионов Кельвинов, начинается горение гелия с образованием углерода и кислорода. После исчерпания гелия в ядре звезда становится нестабильной. Она сбрасывает свои внешние оболочки, которые образуют красивую светящуюся структуру, называемую планетарной туманностью. В центре туманности остается очень горячее и плотное ядро бывшей звезды — белый карлик. Он состоит в основном из углерода и кислорода и поддерживается от дальнейшего коллапса давлением вырожденного электронного газа. Его масса не может превышать предел Чандрасекара, равный примерно $1.44 M_☉$. Белый карлик постепенно остывает, превращаясь со временем в холодный и темный объект — черный карлик (хотя Вселенная еще недостаточно стара, чтобы они успели сформироваться).
Ответ: Звезды малой и средней массы в конце жизни становятся красными гигантами, затем сбрасывают внешние оболочки (планетарная туманность) и превращаются в остывающий белый карлик.
Эволюция массивных звезд (более 8 масс Солнца)
Жизнь массивных звезд (с массой более 8 $M_☉$) протекает гораздо быстрее и заканчивается более драматично. После стадии главной последовательности они также расширяются, но становятся красными сверхгигантами. В их ядрах давление и температура настолько высоки, что последовательно запускаются реакции синтеза все более тяжелых элементов: гелий превращается в углерод, углерод — в неон, затем в кислород, кремний и, наконец, в железо.
Ядро, состоящее из железа, является конечной точкой термоядерной эволюции, так как синтез элементов тяжелее железа не выделяет, а поглощает энергию. Когда в ядре накапливается критическая масса железа, оно больше не может противостоять гравитации и за доли секунды коллапсирует. Этот гравитационный коллапс вызывает мощнейший взрыв, известный как сверхновая (типа II). Взрыв сверхновой разбрасывает в космос внешние слои звезды, обогащая межзвездную среду тяжелыми элементами, из которых в будущем могут сформироваться новые звезды и планеты.
Судьба оставшегося после взрыва ядра зависит от его массы. Если масса ядра составляет от $1.44 M_☉$ до примерно $3 M_☉$ (предел Оппенгеймера — Волкова), то оно коллапсирует в чрезвычайно плотный объект — нейтронную звезду, состоящую в основном из нейтронов. Если же масса ядра превышает $3 M_☉$, то гравитация оказывается настолько сильной, что ничто не может остановить ее коллапс, и ядро превращается в черную дыру — объект, гравитационное притяжение которого настолько велико, что его не может покинуть даже свет.
Ответ: Массивные звезды заканчивают свою жизнь взрывом сверхновой, разбрасывая в космос тяжелые элементы и оставляя после себя либо нейтронную звезду, либо черную дыру.
