Потенциальные (консервативные) силы — это силы, работа которых не зависит от формы траектории движения тела, а определяется только его начальным и конечным положением. Работа таких сил по любой замкнутой траектории равна нулю. К потенциальным силам относятся сила упругости, сила гравитационного взаимодействия (включая силу тяжести), сила электростатического взаимодействия, сила Архимеда. Силы, работа которых зависит от траектории, называются непотенциальными (диссипативными). К ним относятся силы трения (сухого и вязкого). Работа сил трения всегда направлена против движения и зависит от длины траектории. Таким образом, утверждения о том, что силы трения являются потенциальными, неверны.
