Пусть $\omega_1$ и $\omega_2$ — две пересекающиеся окружности с центрами $O_1$ и $O_2$ и радиусами $R_1$ и $R_2$ соответственно. Их общая хорда $AB$ имеет длину $a$.
В первой окружности $\omega_1$ хорда $AB$ является стороной вписанного правильного треугольника. Длина стороны правильного треугольника, вписанного в окружность радиуса $R_1$, выражается формулой $a = R_1\sqrt{3}$. Отсюда находим радиус первой окружности:
$R_1 = \frac{a}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{a\sqrt{3}}{3}$
Во второй окружности $\omega_2$ хорда $AB$ является стороной вписанного квадрата. Длина стороны квадрата, вписанного в окружность радиуса $R_2$, выражается формулой $a = R_2\sqrt{2}$. Отсюда находим радиус второй окружности:
$R_2 = \frac{a}{\sqrt{2}} = \frac{a\sqrt{2}}{2}$
Линия, соединяющая центры окружностей $O_1O_2$, перпендикулярна общей хорде $AB$ и делит её пополам. Пусть $M$ — точка пересечения $O_1O_2$ и $AB$. Тогда $M$ — середина $AB$, и $AM = \frac{a}{2}$. Расстояние между центрами $O_1O_2$ складывается из расстояний от каждого центра до хорды $AB$ ($d_1 = O_1M$ и $d_2 = O_2M$) или равно их разности.
Рассмотрим прямоугольный треугольник $\triangle O_1MA$. По теореме Пифагора:
$O_1M^2 = R_1^2 - AM^2$
$d_1^2 = \left(\frac{a\sqrt{3}}{3}\right)^2 - \left(\frac{a}{2}\right)^2 = \frac{3a^2}{9} - \frac{a^2}{4} = \frac{a^2}{3} - \frac{a^2}{4} = \frac{4a^2 - 3a^2}{12} = \frac{a^2}{12}$
$d_1 = \sqrt{\frac{a^2}{12}} = \frac{a}{2\sqrt{3}} = \frac{a\sqrt{3}}{6}$

Ответ: $\frac{a(3 + \sqrt{3})}{6}$
2) по одну сторону от хорды
Если центры окружностей лежат по одну сторону от хорды $AB$, то расстояние между ними равно разности расстояний от каждого центра до хорды. Сравним $d_1$ и $d_2$: $d_1 = \frac{a\sqrt{3}}{6} \approx \frac{1.732a}{6} \approx 0.289a$, а $d_2 = \frac{a}{2} = 0.5a$. Так как $d_2 > d_1$, расстояние между центрами равно:
$O_1O_2 = d_2 - d_1 = \frac{a}{2} - \frac{a\sqrt{3}}{6} = \frac{3a - a\sqrt{3}}{6} = \frac{a(3 - \sqrt{3})}{6}$
