АРИБАЛЬДИ ДЖУЗЕППЕ (итал. Giuseppe Garibaldi) - национальный герой Италии, генерал, один из лидеров революционно-демократического крыла Рисорджименто. Из семьи моряка. С ранних лет плавал юнгой и матросом на торговых судах по Средиземному и Чёрному морям. Знакомство в 1833 году с итальянским патриотом и революционером Дж. Мадзини и его последователями пробудило интерес Гарибальди к общественным проблемам, сделало его приверженцем идей социальной справедливости и национального объединения Италии. Гарибальди вступил в тайную организацию Мадзини «Молодая Италия», целью которой было объединение и освобождение Италии от иностранного владычества. В 1834 году пытался подготовить восстание на сардинском флоте. Чудом избежал ареста, бежал из страны. 3 июня 1834 года заочно был приговорён Генуэзским судом к смертной казни. Важным этапом в борьбе за объединение Италии стала военная экспедиция Гарибальди на юг страны в 1860 году. 11 мая 1860 года Гарибальди, командуя «Тысячей», помог восставшим жителям о. Сицилия освободиться от власти неаполитанских Бурбонов. Обладая широкими полномочиями, Гарибальди осуществил ряд преобразований на Сицилии в интересах крестьян. В августе 1860 года во главе 20-тысячной армии Гарибальди высадился на юге Неаполитанского королевства, занял ряд городов, включая Неаполь. В битве при Вольтурно (1 октября 1860 года) его армия нанесла решающее поражение войскам противника. По результатам референдума, проведённого 21 октября1860 года, Неаполитанское государство и Сицилия присоединились к Итальянскому королевству. В последующие годы Гарибальди вёл активную политическую деятельность, боролся за ограничение полномочий короля и религиозных конгрегаций, требовал введения обязательного бесплатного школьного образования, децентрализации местного управления, прогрессивного налогообложения, свободы печати и собраний, всеобщего избирательного права. Позиция Гарибальди в это время не отличалась последовательностью. Заявляя о приверженности республиканскому строю, Гарибальди не отвергал монархию, будучи противником религии, мечтал о вере без догм и культа. В конце жизни Гарибальди занялся литературной деятельностью, писал стихи, романы, мемуары.
