Действующее (или эффективное) значение переменного тока $I$ определяется как значение такого постоянного тока, который за время, равное периоду переменного тока, выделит в проводнике то же количество теплоты, что и данный переменный ток. Квадрат действующего значения $I^2$ равен среднему значению квадрата мгновенной силы тока $i^2$ за период $T$. Это значение вычисляется по формуле:

Отсюда находим действующее значение тока:
