Согласно первому закону Ньютона, который является определением инерциальной системы отсчёта (ИСО), если на тело не действуют силы или их действие скомпенсировано, то тело находится в состоянии покоя или движется равномерно и прямолинейно. Состояние покоя — это частный случай равномерного и прямолинейного движения со скоростью, равной нулю.
Принцип относительности Галилея гласит, что все инерциальные системы отсчёта равноправны. Это означает, что законы механики одинаковы во всех ИСО. Любая система отсчёта, движущаяся относительно некоторой ИСО равномерно и прямолинейно, также является инерциальной.
Пусть у нас есть исходная ИСО, назовём её $S$, в которой частица покоится. Это означает, что её скорость $\vec{v}$ в этой системе равна нулю ($\vec{v} = 0$), и, следовательно, её ускорение $\vec{a}$ также равно нулю ($\vec{a} = 0$).
