Рассмотрим первый случай, когда капилляр опущен в жидкость. Жидкость в капилляре поднимается на высоту $h_1$ за счет сил поверхностного натяжения. Условие равновесия столбика жидкости в капилляре заключается в том, что сила поверхностного натяжения, действующая вверх по периметру смачивания, уравновешивает силу тяжести столбика жидкости.
Сила поверхностного натяжения: $F_н = 2πrσ\cosθ$, где $σ$ - коэффициент поверхностного натяжения жидкости, $r$ - радиус капилляра, а $θ$ - краевой угол смачивания.
Сила тяжести столбика жидкости: $P_1 = m_1g = ρV_1g = ρ(πr^2h_1)g$, где $ρ$ - плотность жидкости, $g$ - ускорение свободного падения.
Из условия равновесия $F_н = P_1$ получаем:
$2πrσ\cosθ = ρπr^2h_1g$
Отсюда высота подъема жидкости в капилляре равна:
$h_1 = \frac{2σ\cosθ}{ρgr}$
Теперь рассмотрим второй случай, когда капилляр с жидкостью вынут из сосуда. В этом случае столбик жидкости в капилляре удерживается силами поверхностного натяжения, действующими на двух границах: у верхнего и у нижнего мениска. Обе эти силы направлены вверх (вдоль стенок капилляра внутрь жидкости) и удерживают столбик от вытекания.
Суммарная сила поверхностного натяжения равна удвоенной силе, действующей на один мениск:
$F_{н.общ} = F_{н.верх} + F_{н.низ} = 2πrσ\cosθ + 2πrσ\cosθ = 2(2πrσ\cosθ) = 4πrσ\cosθ$
Эта суммарная сила уравновешивает вес столбика жидкости максимальной высоты $h_{max}$:
$P_{max} = m_{max}g = ρ(πr^2h_{max})g$
Из условия равновесия $F_{н.общ} = P_{max}$ получаем:
$4πrσ\cosθ = ρπr^2h_{max}g$
Отсюда максимальная высота столбика жидкости, который может удержать капилляр, равна:
$h_{max} = \frac{4σ\cosθ}{ρgr}$
Сравнивая выражения для $h_1$ и $h_{max}$, видим, что:
