Carlos Ott: Bien sûr. Mais la principale difficulté a été d’obtenir la meilleure ré-flexion du sol. La demande était de construire un opéra énorme. Nous voulions faire une acoustique complètement naturelle, sans recours à l’électronique. Toutes nos études nous amenaient à la conclusion que, dans ces conditions, cette salle pouvait contenir au maximum 2 600 personnes. Il a fallu beaucoup travailler sur cette question.
C’est sans doute ce qui vous a conduit à concevoir ce décor, très sobre?
Carlos Ott: Oui, mais pas seulement. D’emblée, je me suis orienté vers une salle dans laquelle la couleur noire dominerait. Pour moi, le noir allait donner la plus grande liberté possible aux metteurs en scène, qu’ils abordent le répertoire classique ou une création très moderne. Je souhaitais que rien ne vienne distraire de la représentation.
Le ministre de la Culture, Jack Lang*, avait par contre rêvé d’un opéra en rouge et or. Ce mariage flamboyant était pour

lui symbolique de la grande tradition de l’opéra. Nous étions donc en désaccord. Il m’a proposé de soumettre la question à François Mitterrand lui-même. Nous avons alors convenu de lui soumettre deux maquettes, les deux propositions, auxquelles j’ai décidé d’ajouter une troisième, intermédiaire, qui jouait sur un noir légèrement bleuté. Nous lui avons fait une présentation. Il nous a dit: «Dans cette affaire, je ne suis que le président de la République. Mes goûts me porteraint volontiers à choisir la proposition en noir. Mais ce n’est que mon penchant, vous faites ce que vous voulez.» La question était, donc, réglée.
Peu avant l’inauguration, j’ai reçu, à l’aube, un coup de téléphone de l’Elysée me demandant de rejoindre François Mitterrand. A la fin de la visite, il m’a pris par le bras et je l’ai entendu me dire: «Monsieur l’architecte, cette salle est habillée de ce noir, n’est-ce pas? C’est mieux que le noir bleuté que vous aviez également suggéré. Le noir, c’était votre première proposition. C’était la bonne solution. Il faut toujours être convaincu de la solution qu’on met en avant.»
Comment, à votre avis, voyait-il l’architecture?
Carlos Ott: Je crois qu’il avait une forte inclination pour l’architecture résolument moderne, forte.
