Les cafés en France
Apparus pendant la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, les cafés deviennent en France des lieux de culture. Au fil du temps, ils se multiplient rapidement; on y échange des nouvelles, des idées, on y aborde les questions à l'ordre du jour.
Au XVIIIe siècle, les philosophes se réunissent dans des cafés différents: Diderot rend célèbre le café de la Régence et ses joueurs d'échecs. Montesquieu en parle dans ses Lettres persanes. D'autres établissements, le café Gradot et le café Laurent, sont le rendez-vous des écrivains et des philosophes, ainsi le café Procope que fréquentent Fontenelle, Voltaire, Diderot.
Plus tard, ces cafés et beaucoup d'autres sont fréquentés par de nouveaux philosophes et écrivains. Par exemple, le café de la Place Blanche où se réunissaient les surréalistes, le café Certa qui est cher aux dadaïstes. Nombre d'écrivains ont également rendu mythiques certains cafés.

Aujourd'hui, on se souvient que les cafés ont été des lieux de débats et c'est ainsi que les années 1990 ont vu naître, Place de la Bastille, un café philo qui rassemble chaque semaine sur un thème des passionnés de philosophie.
La recherche de la part du public de relations avec les écrivains a engendré de nouveau type de rencontres dans les lieux souvent inhabituels, tel que la Villa Gillet à Lyon ou la Foire du livre à Brive.
