По условию задачи даны прямая $a$ и плоскость $\alpha$, которые параллельны одной и той же прямой $b$. Запишем это в виде математических соотношений:
- $a \parallel b$
- $\alpha \parallel b$
Рассмотрим второе условие: $\alpha \parallel b$. По определению, если плоскость параллельна прямой, то они не имеют общих точек. Из этого следует (согласно теореме стереометрии), что в плоскости $\alpha$ существует прямая $c$, которая также параллельна прямой $b$.
Таким образом, мы имеем:
- $c \subset \alpha$ (прямая $c$ лежит в плоскости $\alpha$)
- $c \parallel b$ (прямая $c$ параллельна прямой $b$)
Теперь сопоставим этот факт с первым условием задачи ($a \parallel b$). Используя свойство транзитивности параллельных прямых в пространстве (две прямые, параллельные третьей, параллельны между собой), из $a \parallel b$ и $c \parallel b$ получаем, что $a \parallel c$.
Итак, задача сводится к определению взаимного расположения прямой $a$ и плоскости $\alpha$, зная, что прямая $a$ параллельна прямой $c$, которая лежит в плоскости $\alpha$ ($c \subset \alpha$).
Согласно признаку параллельности прямой и плоскости, если прямая ($a$) параллельна некоторой прямой ($c$), лежащей в плоскости ($\alpha$), то возможны два случая:

Случай 1: Прямая $a$ лежит в плоскости $\alpha$ ($a \subset \alpha$)
Этот случай возможен. Например, пусть плоскость $\alpha$ — это плоскость стола. Прямая $a$ — это один из краев стола. Прямая $b$ — это прямая в пространстве, расположенная над столом и параллельная краю $a$. В этом случае $a \parallel b$. Поскольку прямая $a$ лежит в плоскости $\alpha$ и $b \parallel a$, то прямая $b$ будет параллельна и всей плоскости $\alpha$. Условия задачи выполнены, и при этом прямая $a$ лежит в плоскости $\alpha$.
Случай 2: Прямая $a$ параллельна плоскости $\alpha$ ($a \parallel \alpha$)
Этот случай также возможен. Например, пусть плоскость $\alpha$ — это плоскость пола. Прямая $b$ — это прямая, расположенная на высоте 1 метр параллельно полу. Тогда $\alpha \parallel b$. Прямая $a$ — это другая прямая, расположенная на высоте 2 метра и также параллельная прямой $b$. Тогда $a \parallel b$. Оба условия задачи выполнены. При этом прямая $a$ не имеет общих точек с плоскостью $\alpha$ (полом), а значит, $a \parallel \alpha$.
Третий вариант взаимного расположения — пересечение прямой и плоскости в одной точке — исключен. Если бы прямая $a$ пересекала плоскость $\alpha$, она не могла бы быть параллельна прямой $c$, лежащей в этой плоскости.
Ответ: Прямая $a$ может лежать в плоскости $\alpha$ или быть параллельной плоскости $\alpha$.
