Для решения задачи воспользуемся теоремой о площади ортогональной проекции. Площадь проекции $S_{пр}$ плоской фигуры на некоторую плоскость связана с площадью самой фигуры $S_{сеч}$ и углом $\alpha$ между плоскостью фигуры и плоскостью проекции соотношением: $S_{пр} = S_{сеч} \cdot \cos\alpha$. Отсюда искомая площадь сечения равна $S_{сеч} = \frac{S_{пр}}{\cos\alpha}$. В нашем случае проекция осуществляется на плоскость основания $ABC$ (грань $ABCD$).
Плоскость сечения проходит через ребро $AD$. Форма сечения, а следовательно, и его проекция на основание, зависит от угла наклона $\alpha$. Необходимо рассмотреть два случая, которые разделяются критическим углом $\alpha_0$. Этот угол соответствует сечению, проходящему через ребро $AD$ и дальние вершины верхней грани $B_1$ и $C_1$. Такое сечение является прямоугольником $ADB_1C_1$.
Угол $\alpha_0$ между плоскостью $ADB_1C_1$ и плоскостью основания $ABCD$ можно найти как линейный угол двугранного угла. Плоскость грани $ABB_1A_1$ перпендикулярна ребру $AD$ (линии пересечения плоскостей). Следовательно, угол $\alpha_0$ равен углу между прямыми $AB$ и $AB_1$, то есть $\angle B_1AB$. В прямоугольном треугольнике $ABB_1$ катеты равны ребру куба: $AB = a$ и $BB_1 = a$. Тогда:$\tan(\alpha_0) = \tan(\angle B_1AB) = \frac{BB_1}{AB} = \frac{a}{a} = 1$.Отсюда критический угол $\alpha_0 = \pi/4$.
Рассмотрим два случая в зависимости от величины угла $\alpha$.
Случай 1: $0 \le \alpha \le \pi/4$
В этом диапазоне углов плоскость сечения пересекает вертикальные ребра куба $BB_1$ и $CC_1$. Проекцией получившегося сечения на плоскость основания $ABCD$ является сам квадрат основания $ABCD$.Площадь проекции $S_{пр}$ равна площади этого квадрата: $S_{пр} = a^2$.Тогда площадь сечения вычисляется по формуле:$S_{сеч} = \frac{S_{пр}}{\cos\alpha} = \frac{a^2}{\cos\alpha}$.
Случай 2: $\pi/4 < \alpha \le \pi/2$
В этом диапазоне углов плоскость сечения пересекает верхнюю грань куба $A_1B_1C_1D_1$. Проекцией такого сечения на плоскость основания будет прямоугольник, одна сторона которого равна $AD=a$. Вторая сторона будет короче $a$. Чтобы найти ее длину, можно заметить, что линия пересечения секущей плоскости с верхней гранью $A_1B_1C_1D_1$ отсекает от нее прямоугольник, длина которого (вдоль направления $AB$) равна $a\cot\alpha$.Таким образом, площадь проекции сечения $S_{пр}$ равна площади этого прямоугольника: $S_{пр} = a \cdot (a\cot\alpha) = a^2\cot\alpha$.Тогда площадь сечения вычисляется по формуле:$S_{сеч} = \frac{S_{пр}}{\cos\alpha} = \frac{a^2\cot\alpha}{\cos\alpha} = \frac{a^2 \frac{\cos\alpha}{\sin\alpha}}{\cos\alpha} = \frac{a^2}{\sin\alpha}$.
Ответ: Площадь сечения $S$ определяется выражением:
