В начале палеозоя произошло знаменательное событие — концентрация кислорода в атмосфере достигла 10 % от современного уровня (2-я точка Пастера). Жизнь постепенно стала выходить из водной среды на сушу, стали формироваться наземные экосистемы. Дальнейшее их развитие проходило относительно автономно от процессов эволюции водных экосистем. Развитие наземной растительности привело к увеличению количества кислорода и пищи, которые были необходимы для последующей эволюции крупных наземных животных.
В середине палеозоя (около 400 млн лет назад) потребление кислорода сравнялось с его продуцированием, в результате чего его концентрация в атмосфере стабилизировалась и достигла уровня, близкого к современному, т. е. около 20 %.
В конце палеозоя (около 350—250 млн лет назад) климат был влажным и тёплым, что способствовало бурному развитию растительности, вызвавшему снижение содержания CO2 и повышение содержания O2 в атмосфере, а также усиление биопродуктивности биосферы. В результате образовались запасы ископаемого топлива.
В процессе эволюции биосферы усиление её биопродуктивности всегда сопровождалось интенсивным образованием многих полезных ископаемых, таких, как нефть, газ, уголь, горючие сланцы, фосфориты, калийные соли и др.
