На рисунке мы видим, как луч света SA, падая на границу раздела двух сред в точке А, преломляется и продолжает распространяться во второй среде. Чтобы определить, какая из сред оптически более плотная, необходимо сравнить угол падения $\alpha$ и угол преломления $\beta$. Эти углы измеряются относительно перпендикуляра (нормали), проведенного к границе раздела в точке падения луча.
Из рисунка видно, что преломленный луч направлен ближе к нормали, чем падающий луч. Это означает, что угол преломления $\beta$ меньше угла падения $\alpha$: $\beta < \alpha$.
Согласно закону преломления света (закону Снеллиуса), отношение синуса угла падения к синусу угла преломления есть величина постоянная для двух данных сред, равная относительному показателю преломления: $ \frac{\sin \alpha}{\sin \beta} = \frac{n_2}{n_1} $ где $n_1$ и $n_2$ — абсолютные показатели преломления сред 1 и 2 соответственно.

Оптическая плотность среды прямо пропорциональна ее показателю преломления. Среда с большим показателем преломления является оптически более плотной. Так как $n_2 > n_1$, среда 2 является оптически более плотной.

Скорость распространения света в среде ($v$) связана с ее абсолютным показателем преломления ($n$) следующим соотношением: $n = \frac{c}{v}$ где $c$ — скорость света в вакууме. Отсюда скорость света в среде: $v = \frac{c}{n}$.
Из этой формулы следует, что скорость света в среде обратно пропорциональна ее показателю преломления. Таким образом, в среде с меньшим показателем преломления (менее оптически плотной) скорость света будет больше.
