Расстоянием от точки до прямой, не содержащей эту точку, называется длина перпендикуляра, опущенного из этой точки на прямую. Перпендикуляр — это отрезок, который соединяет данную точку с точкой на прямой и образует с этой прямой прямой угол ($90^\circ$). Точка пересечения перпендикуляра и прямой называется основанием перпендикуляра.
Этот отрезок (перпендикуляр) является кратчайшим из всех отрезков, соединяющих данную точку с точками на прямой. Любой другой отрезок, соединяющий точку с прямой, называется наклонной. Длина любой наклонной всегда больше длины перпендикуляра, так как в прямоугольном треугольнике, образованном перпендикуляром, наклонной и отрезком прямой, наклонная является гипотенузой, а перпендикуляр — катетом. Как известно, гипотенуза всегда длиннее катета.
Если точка принадлежит прямой, то расстояние от точки до прямой считается равным нулю.
Ответ: Расстоянием от точки до прямой называется длина перпендикуляра, проведенного из данной точки к данной прямой.
