Сначала определим размеры квадрата, который необходимо сложить. Площадь исходного прямоугольника равна $4 \times 9 = 36$ кв. ед. Квадрат, составленный из его частей, будет иметь такую же площадь. Следовательно, сторона квадрата будет равна $\sqrt{36} = 6$ ед. Наша задача — разрезать прямоугольник $4 \times 9$ на две равные части и собрать из них квадрат $6 \times 6$.
Это достигается с помощью ступенчатого разреза, который делит прямоугольник на две конгруэнтные (равные) фигуры. Линия разреза начинается на одной из длинных сторон на расстоянии 3 единицы от угла, идет перпендикулярно до середины прямоугольника (на глубину 2 единицы), затем продолжается параллельно длинной стороне на 3 единицы, и, наконец, снова идет перпендикулярно до второй длинной стороны.
Полученные две части затем можно сложить в квадрат. Одна часть перемещается и прикладывается к другой так, что их ступенчатые стороны совмещаются, образуя квадрат со стороной 6.
