Обозначим длины трех неравных отрезков, на которые разделили исходный отрезок, как $a$, $b$ и $c$. Пусть $a$ — длина первого крайнего отрезка, $b$ — длина среднего отрезка, и $c$ — длина второго крайнего отрезка.
Согласно условию, общая длина исходного отрезка равна 32 см. Следовательно, сумма длин трех его частей также равна 32 см. Мы можем записать это в виде первого уравнения:
