Любой водоём кажется более мелким, чем в действительности, из-за физического явления, называемого преломлением света.
Свет, отраженный от дна водоёма, проходит из одной оптической среды (воды) в другую (воздух). Вода является оптически более плотной средой, чем воздух. Когда световой луч переходит из более плотной среды в менее плотную под углом, отличным от нуля, он изменяет направление своего распространения — преломляется. На границе вода-воздух луч света отклоняется так, что угол преломления (в воздухе) становится больше угла падения (в воде).
Наши глаза и мозг воспринимают свет так, как будто он распространяется по прямой линии без искажений. Поэтому, наблюдая за дном водоёма, наш мозг интерпретирует приходящие в глаз преломлённые лучи как прямые, и строит мнимое изображение дна. Это мнимое изображение формируется на пересечении продолжений преломлённых лучей и находится на меньшей глубине, чем реальное дно. Именно из-за этой оптической иллюзии глубина водоёма кажется меньше действительной.
Отношение между действительной глубиной $\text{H}$ и кажущейся глубиной $\text{h}$ для наблюдателя, смотрящего перпендикулярно поверхности, можно выразить формулой:
$h = \frac{H}{n}$
где $\text{n}$ — это абсолютный показатель преломления воды (для воды $n \approx 1.33$). Из формулы видно, что кажущаяся глубина $\text{h}$ всегда меньше реальной глубины $\text{H}$. Например, если реальная глубина составляет 4 метра, то казаться она будет равной примерно $4 / 1.33 \approx 3$ метрам.
Ответ: Водоём кажется мельче из-за явления преломления света на границе раздела вода-воздух. Лучи света, отраженные от дна, выходя из воды в воздух, преломляются. Наш мозг воспринимает эти лучи как идущие по прямой, из-за чего формируется мнимое изображение дна, расположенное выше, чем его реальное положение.
