Ответ зависит от оценки деятельности её мужа. Те, кто называет его в целом неплохим правителем, пишут, что заговор Екатерины II пустил слишком глубокие корни в гвардии, да и не только, ведь в поддержке Петру III отказали и моряки Кронштадта.
Историки, которые в целом разделяют отношение Екатерины II к личности своего мужа, обращает внимание на то, сколько самых разнообразных групп в обществе он успел обидеть. Прежде всего, это армия, победы которой в Семилетней войне обесценили. Но не только она. Например, реформа церкви, которая кардинально меняла даже внешнюю, обрядовую сторону православия, задела вообще всех верующих. Такие историки не преуменьшают роль заговора, но добавляют, что поддержке у императора и не могло ниоткуда взяться.
В любом случае, важную роль сыграло и поведение самого Петра III, а вернее его бездействие, даже несмотря на советы Миниха. У него было лишь пару попыток предпринять хоть что-либо, после провала которых император совсем пал духом и просто покорно ждал своей судьбы. Фридрих Великий недаром сказал: он позволил лишить себя власти, как ребёнок, которого отправляют спать. Вот уж действительно, немного поартачился, но ничего серьёзного не предпринял.
Таким образом, переворот был таким простым потому, что ему почти никто не сопротивлялся из-за позиции самого императора, и из-за либо хорошо подготовленного заговора, либо отсутствия у императора поддержки в обществе: последний фактор всё равно остаётся.
