Пусть дан правильный двенадцатиугольник со стороной $a$. Обозначим его центр как $O$. Вершины нового правильного шестиугольника являются серединами шести сторон двенадцатиугольника, взятых через одну.
Рассмотрим две такие последовательные вершины нового шестиугольника. Пусть это будут точки $M_1$ и $M_2$, которые являются серединами сторон $A_1A_2$ и $A_3A_4$ исходного двенадцатиугольника соответственно. Длина отрезка $M_1M_2$ и будет искомой стороной шестиугольника.
Расстояние от центра правильного многоугольника до середины его стороны называется апофемой. Обозначим апофему двенадцатиугольника как $r$. Тогда отрезки $OM_1$ и $OM_2$ являются апофемами, и их длины равны: $|OM_1| = |OM_2| = r$.
Таким образом, треугольник $OM_1M_2$ является равнобедренным. Найдем угол $\angle M_1OM_2$ между апофемами. Этот угол равен углу поворота от стороны $A_1A_2$ до стороны $A_3A_4$.
Центральный угол, опирающийся на одну сторону правильного двенадцатиугольника, равен $\frac{360^\circ}{12} = 30^\circ$. Так как мы берем стороны через одну, то есть переходим от стороны $A_1A_2$ к стороне $A_3A_4$, пропуская сторону $A_2A_3$, то угол между соответствующими апофемами будет равен удвоенному центральному углу, соответствующему одной стороне.

Поскольку треугольник $OM_1M_2$ является равнобедренным с углом при вершине $60^\circ$, то он является равносторонним. Это означает, что все его стороны равны: $|M_1M_2| = |OM_1| = |OM_2| = r$.
Итак, сторона образовавшегося правильного шестиугольника равна апофеме исходного правильного двенадцатиугольника.
Теперь найдем длину апофемы $r$ правильного двенадцатиугольника со стороной $a$. Рассмотрим равнобедренный треугольник $OA_1A_2$, где $A_1$ и $A_2$ — соседние вершины двенадцатиугольника. $OM_1$ — его высота (апофема), биссектриса и медиана. Избавимся от иррациональности в знаменателе:
$\frac{\sqrt{3}-1}{\sqrt{3}+1} = \frac{(\sqrt{3}-1)(\sqrt{3}-1)}{(\sqrt{3}+1)(\sqrt{3}-1)} = \frac{(\sqrt{3})^2 - 2\sqrt{3} + 1}{3-1} = \frac{3 - 2\sqrt{3} + 1}{2} = \frac{4 - 2\sqrt{3}}{2} = 2 - \sqrt{3}$.
Теперь подставим значение $\tan(15^\circ)$ в формулу для апофемы:
$r = \frac{a}{2(2 - \sqrt{3})} = \frac{a(2 + \sqrt{3})}{2(2 - \sqrt{3})(2 + \sqrt{3})} = \frac{a(2 + \sqrt{3})}{2(4 - 3)} = \frac{a(2 + \sqrt{3})}{2}$.
Так как сторона шестиугольника равна апофеме $r$, то ее длина равна $\frac{a(2 + \sqrt{3})}{2}$.
