Красный оттенок Солнца или Луны, когда они находятся низко над горизонтом, объясняется явлением, известным как рэлеевское рассеяние света в атмосфере Земли. Суть этого явления заключается в следующем.
Солнечный свет (а лунный свет является отраженным солнечным) представляет собой электромагнитное излучение, состоящее из волн разной длины, которые человеческий глаз воспринимает как разные цвета. В видимом спектре самый коротковолновый свет — фиолетовый и синий, а самый длинноволновый — оранжевый и красный.
Проходя через земную атмосферу, свет взаимодействует с молекулами газов (в основном азота и кислорода), которые намного меньше длины волны видимого света. Это взаимодействие приводит к рассеянию света. Интенсивность рассеяния зависит от длины волны, что описывается законом Рэлея. Согласно этому закону, интенсивность рассеянного света $\text{I}$ обратно пропорциональна четвертой степени длины волны $\lambda$:
$I \propto \frac{1}{\lambda^4}$
Из этой формулы следует, что коротковолновый синий и фиолетовый свет рассеиваются гораздо интенсивнее, чем длинноволновый красный свет. Именно поэтому небо днем голубое: мы видим рассеянный во все стороны синий свет.
Когда Солнце или Луна находятся высоко в небе, их свет проходит через атмосферу по относительно короткому пути. Хотя синий свет и рассеивается, до наших глаз доходит достаточно света всех длин волн, чтобы светило казалось нам белым или слегка желтоватым.
Однако, когда Солнце или Луна находятся низко над горизонтом (на восходе или на закате), их свету приходится проходить гораздо более длинный путь в атмосфере. На этом длинном пути большая часть коротковолнового света (синего, голубого, фиолетового) рассеивается в стороны. До глаз наблюдателя доходит в основном свет, который рассеивается слабо, — это длинноволновые лучи: красные, оранжевые и желтые. В результате видимый диск Солнца или Луны приобретает характерный красный или оранжевый оттенок.
Ответ: Солнце и Луна кажутся красными, когда находятся низко над горизонтом, потому что их свету приходится проходить через более толстый слой атмосферы. При этом коротковолновый свет (синий, фиолетовый) сильно рассеивается молекулами воздуха и не достигает глаз наблюдателя. Длинноволновый свет (красный, оранжевый) рассеивается значительно слабее и проходит сквозь атмосферу, окрашивая небесные тела в красные тона.
