Это явление объясняется рассеянием света на мелких частицах дыма. Цвет дыма, который мы видим, зависит от того, наблюдаем ли мы рассеянный свет (на тёмном фоне) или свет, прошедший сквозь дым (на светлом фоне).
Почему освещенный столб дыма на темном фоне кажется синеватым
Когда мы смотрим на столб дыма на тёмном фоне (например, на фоне леса, земли или тёмного здания), мы видим солнечный свет, который рассеивается частицами дыма в сторону наших глаз. Частицы дыма достаточно малы, чтобы рассеивать коротковолновый свет (синий и фиолетовый) значительно сильнее, чем длинноволновый (красный, оранжевый). Интенсивность рэлеевского рассеяния обратно пропорциональна четвёртой степени длины волны света ($I \sim 1/\lambda^4$). Поэтому в рассеянном свете преобладают синие тона, и дым кажется нам синеватым. Этот же механизм объясняет, почему небо голубое.
Ответ: На тёмном фоне мы видим свет, рассеянный частицами дыма. Поскольку коротковолновый синий свет рассеивается гораздо эффективнее длинноволнового красного, дым приобретает синеватый оттенок.
Почему на фоне светлого неба дым кажется желтым или красноватым
Когда мы наблюдаем тот же столб дыма на фоне яркого неба, мы видим свет от неба, который прошёл сквозь дым на пути к нам. При прохождении через дым синяя часть светового спектра интенсивно рассеивается частицами дыма во все стороны, то есть уходит из прямого луча зрения. В результате свет, достигший наших глаз после прохождения через дым, оказывается обеднённым синими и фиолетовыми лучами. Белый свет, из которого «убрали» синюю составляющую, воспринимается человеческим глазом как желтоватый или красноватый. Похожий эффект мы наблюдаем, глядя на Солнце во время заката: его свет проходит через более толстый слой атмосферы, синий свет рассеивается, и до нас доходит преимущественно красный.
Ответ: На фоне светлого неба мы видим свет, прошедший сквозь дым. При этом синяя часть спектра рассеивается в стороны, а до наблюдателя доходит свет, в котором преобладают жёлтые и красные тона.
