Наличие двух глаз у человека и других существ является результатом эволюции и предоставляет несколько ключевых преимуществ для выживания и взаимодействия с окружающим миром.
Стереоскопическое (бинокулярное) зрение. Это главная причина. Глаза расположены на некотором расстоянии друг от друга, поэтому каждый из них видит объект под своим углом. Мозг получает две немного отличающиеся картинки и, анализируя разницу между ними (так называемый параллакс), создает единое объемное, трехмерное изображение. Эта способность, называемая стереопсисом, позволяет точно определять расстояние до предметов, их форму и взаимное расположение в пространстве. Глубинное зрение критически важно для хищников при оценке дистанции до добычи, а для человека — при выполнении любых точных действий: от вдевания нитки в иголку до вождения автомобиля.
Расширение поля зрения. Два глаза обеспечивают более широкий обзор, чем один. Поля зрения левого и правого глаза пересекаются в центре, формируя зону бинокулярного зрения, но по краям остаются области, которые видит только один глаз. Это увеличивает общее поле зрения, позволяя замечать объекты, находящиеся сбоку. У травоядных животных глаза часто расположены по бокам головы, что дает им панорамный обзор для своевременного обнаружения хищников, жертвуя при этом зоной стереоскопического зрения.
Повышение надежности и резервирование. Второй глаз выполняет функцию резервной системы. В случае повреждения или болезни одного глаза, второй позволяет сохранить способность видеть. Хотя при этом теряется полноценное стереоскопическое зрение, возможность ориентироваться в пространстве сохраняется, что является важным фактором выживания.
Компенсация слепого пятна. На сетчатке каждого глаза есть область, где зрительный нерв крепится к глазному яблоку. В этой точке отсутствуют светочувствительные клетки (палочки и колбочки), поэтому она не воспринимает свет. Это так называемое слепое пятно. Мы не замечаем его в повседневной жизни, потому что мозг использует информацию от второго глаза, чтобы заполнить пробел в изображении, которое строит первый глаз, и наоборот.
Ответ: Два глаза необходимы живым существам для получения объемного (стереоскопического) зрения, позволяющего точно оценивать расстояние до объектов; для расширения общего поля зрения; для надежности зрительной системы (один глаз является резервным); и для компенсации слепых пятен.
